RESULTS & UPCOMINGS
The Annual Forever Free chili cook-off in 2006 welcomed the 74 chili cooks to some of the best weather anyone had ever seen in a Texas July. With a high of 85 degrees and the grass, shade trees and cool breeze from Towne Lake it could not have been better. With four C.A.S.I. world champions in attendance, the competition was a tough as it gets.
Women swept the top honors with former world champion, Doris Coats, taking first place. Following were Sherree Duncan, second, and Dawn Maca, third. First place Showmanship went to T.J. Friedel. Second place Showmanship was won by a local team captained by Whitney Williams and Steve Heaser came in third.
The cook-off held each year on the Saturday before the 4th of July each year always attracts the best chili cooks around. The winners were announced by 3:30 pm with the record crowd enjoying the pomp of the awards presentation. Mikie McGarity’s hand painted stoves were awarded to the top three cooks, and everyone that entered received camping tabels with the Forever Free logo on it, which was just part of the great gifts for which the event has become famous.

“Howdy Folks! I just wanted to remind you that the 16th Annual Cloudcroft Chili Cook Off in Cloudcroft, NM will be held on July 22nd. Everything seems to be on track. We've had rain so the fire restrictions have been lifted. This is a good thing because it's hard to cook chili if you can't light your stove (and you couldn't 10 days ago). I guess you should also know that all arrangements for the Black Gold Porta-Potty have been finalized. Yup, Johnny's Johns is going to deliver a brand, spanking new porta-potty for our friends from TX so they won't have to deal with all those steps.
Many of you have stayed in the Alta Vista Motel in previous years. For those of you who have, you know that the place only has eight motel rooms.
Please be aware that there are only three left to rent as of about 10:00 yesterday morning. If you're interested, please call Ms. Russell at 505-682-2221. The going rate for two folks is $60.00 per night (the average in Cloudcroft is $89.00 per night).
This is also the weekend (as was the case last year) that Cloudcroft will host their Songs in the Clouds event. Finally, I've received calls from folks east of Dallas who are planning to attend so this should be a fun cook off. I hope to see you there.” (Bud Barrick)

“Shannon IL is known as barbecue's "Field of Dreams." It looks like a scene from the movie. The Lion's Park has baseball diamonds with the outfield edged by cornfields. The "Behind the Fence CCO" is so named becuase at first we were behind a fence from the barbecue teams. Now we're all mixed together. And of course, the weather last Saturday was perfect for a chili cookoff. If you happen to find yourself in north central Illinois the week after July 4th, the cookoff is worth checking out. At least you'll eat good, as the twenty-three cooks who showed up this year can attest. The winners:
