“I am sad to inform you that a long time CASI and ICS chili cook Vic Powell passed away early this morning (10 May) after a long bout with cancer and other ailments. A fighter to the end, he will be sorely missed and loved. Please pray for Angie as she goes through the grieving process and the adjustments to her life in the near future.

Condolences may be sent to his wife, Angie Powell, at 4813 Box Canyon Drive, Temple, TX 76502-7314.” (Jim Stoddard)

“The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission “Seller/SERVER Training Certification” course is being offered at the Great Peppers Meeting. This four hour course will be on Thursday, September 7th from noon to 4pm.

The laws and liability concerning alcohol have changed over the past few years and the information this course provides will certainly be beneficial to those who attend. It is not just about “paid employee’s” serving beer and drinks, but also those that are involved in serving at “events”. This includes chili cookoffs as a head judge and those serving the judges the beverages. Those of us that attended this course were very “enlightened” and certainly made us aware of some potential situations that can be avoided.

The course costs $25.00 (payable the day of the class) and is LIMITD in class size. If you want to take this class, let me know as soon as possible at
casihotrodd@aol.com or cell phone 210-887-8827.” (Ken Rodd)

“I would personally like to invite everyone to The Southwest Open Regional Cookoff held in Wichita Falls, TX on May 27th, Memorial Day weekend. This year’s cookoff will be held at Shrineland, off Hatton Road. Turn in will be at 2:00 and will be chili grind only.

There has been some confusion for some reason that I would like to clear up. You will be camping (no hookups) and cooking at the same sight.

We will also be hosting the NOB Pod cookoff at the same location on Sunday with an earlier turn in time.” (Carol Gibbs)

Friday started out with the golf tournament with 5 teams participating. Doc Kinnison, Nigel Delgado, Wendell Carnes and Bucky Seelig winning 1st place and the traveling trophy, "Boggy." The cooks party was enjoyed by all with a delicious BBQ dinner and Howdy-Roo birthday cake, followed by dancing to the music of our favorite Nigel and Lynn Delgado. “Hello, chili friends. I’m off on another adventure: I am participating in a 60-mile, 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk. I’m really doing two of the Walks – one as a walker and one as a worker. Many of you know I have been involved with the Komen Foundation Race for the Cure since the early 1990s; net proceeds of the Breast Cancer 3-Day will support breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment through the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.

I have chosen the Michigan Walk for my event, August 11-13, and I have committed to crew for the Dallas event in October. Crewing the event will be rewarding, but I wanted to gain first-hand experience with the event, so I am doing the Walk myself in Detroit. I have paid my registrations for the Michigan and Dallas events, and I will pay my own travel expenses. Your donations go 100% to the Breast Cancer 3-Day.

Since this is a fund-raiser to support breast cancer research, I need your help. I've set my personal goal at $3,000 for Detroit (there is no minimum for Dallas since I’m working) but would love to exceed that goal. If you donate $.50 a mile, that’s a donation of $30. Anything is most appreciated. And, you can donate to either the Detroit or the Dallas Walk.

You can make your donation on line for the Detroit Walk at

http://www.the3day.org/faf/search/searchParticipants.asp?ievent=131556

or you can return your donation to me (75 Golden Poppy Loop, Belton, TX 76513) to forward to the event office (specify Detroit or Dallas if it matters to you). Please do not make checks payable to me personally; rather, make them to “Breast Cancer 3-Day”. Thanks very much to those who have already donated – you’re terrific!

As hard as it is for me to ask for help (especially monetary help) from my friends – and as long and tiring as the training is for this Walk – it’s all much easier than having breast cancer.” (Johnye Harriman)

Happy Birthday to Frank Fox.

I’d like to thank John Caffey for a very enlightening experience at Howdy Roo. As a belated birthday gift, John acquired some fine wine for me. He thought I should have a Texan’s appreciation for fine wine. We invited a bunch of friends over and had a party with Thunderbird and Boone’s Farm. Ah, the exquisite bouquet……
