“Last Monday (2/20) Peggy suffered a stroke while at work. When she felt light headed and her right side starting to go numb, she called her boss and told him to call 911 and then to call me at home. Peggy is on the road to recovery and is actually doing quite well. She started her therapy this past Monday (after having been evaluated on Saturday) and even though she said they wore her out, she loved it. She’s doing 3 hours of physical therapy (including occupational and group) and 1 hour of speech therapy. They gave me things to work on with her over the weekend and also during her “off” hours. Her speech is really quite good especially is she slows down. She’s talked to her daughter and two of her best friends on the phone and they’ve remarked about how surprisingly well she sounds. I have a meeting scheduled with the case manager and therapists on Monday. Peg’s spirits are high and she’s gaining a great deal of confidence every day. Her appetite is good and so far they’re feeding her so well she’s had to take brief naps after each meal. I’ve taken her a little Mexican food (that my mom taught me to cook) two evenings this week and she’s been able to eat it as well. Yesterday they let me take her outside for the first time (it was 78 degrees).

Peg’s address is:

“Goldfield Ghost Town – February 25, 2006:

As the early morning sun rose in the sky twenty four competitors searched for the best spot to prepare for a long day of battle at the Goldfield Ghost Town. The cooks lined both sides of Main Street readying themselves for a “chili shoot out”. By late morning the streets were filled with hoards of spectators who came to witness the BIG EVENT. At 11:30 the shoot out started as the cooks armed themselves with ladles to serve this ravenous mob. People were scurrying up and down the street trying to find the best tasting elixir of the chili gods, CHILI! Cooks shouted out boastful exclamations, bold braggart lies and some half truths to lure tasters to their pot of red. They also cast words of condemnation and dispersions on their fellow competitors supposed “best ever bowl of chili”. Some even partook in intimidation to get a vote cast for their beloved concoction. This almost seemed like a lawless town of yesteryear. The crowd cast their ballots for People’s Choice and the Law (judges) finally showed up to settle on the best CASI Competition Chili.

By late afternoon all the ballots and judging sheets were finally tallied, and the winners are:

RED CHILI

We need to thank Craig and Shera Hardy and Mayor Bob Shoose from the Ghost Town, for all their hard work to put this event together. The cook’s party was another hit and the trophies were, as always, spectacular and very special. I also want to thank the cooks who come and support this cook off. A huge round of applause also goes to Bernie K, Banaswood, Lori C, Bob B., Willie R, Roland R, the Chili Chicks and Nancy K for all the help keeping everything in order and on schedule.

When the dust settled we had sold over 500 tasting cups and raised $2100.00 for the Nancy Rutledge Foundation.” (Tom Klug)

“The first Richard Hinds Memorial Scholarship Fund cookoff was a great success! We had 62 cooks. Washer pitching brought out a good crowd. 42 Tournament was won by Dave Boone and Connie Collier. They each won a set of dominoes commemorating the event. The dessert auction was wonderful raising $2, 305.00 with the highlight being the pecan pie Richard's Mother baked going for $700.00! The total collected so far is $13,952.00 with more coming in.

I want to thank everyone for all their help and support. Once again Black Gold Chili Pod came through with all their help and expertise. Also a lot of hard work was provided by numerous other pod members. We really saw what can happen when so many people work together to make it happen. Comstock is just a small town and they really turned out. Reminded me of a good old time country get-together.” (Janita Hinds)

Tim Collier, BBQ Champion and Barbara C. Taylor Chili Champion at the Terlingua Brontze Roadrunner Cookoff. $2492.00 donated to the Terlingua School Activity Fund in Memory of Carolyn Hejtmancik and to the Terlingua School New Building Fund. (Dorathy Williams)

“Well now, the Annual Caballo Eagle's Aerie CCO will be held this weekend, March 4th, and here's an update. The Eagle's Aerie is about a mile to the south of I-25. Take exit #59, head south, and look for the U.S. Flag.
You're there! The Aerie has plenty of RV hook-ups and they go for $6.00 per night. They've placed pad locks on the power boxes so you'll have to go inside and pay, get the key, and then have fun!

You need to know that there is overpass construction occurring at the Dona Ana overpass about three miles north of Las Cruces. This should be no problem but the speed limit is 35 mph.

On Friday evening, there will be a turkey dinner pot luck. You're encouraged to bring a side dish (I'm bringing a green bean casserole [I think]). Saturday morning the Eagles will prepare a pancake breakfast for $4.00 bucks. They'll have brisket sandwiches for lunch and the cost is $3.00 bucks.

As always, they'll hold a pool tournament beginning on Friday and concluding on Saturday evening. This is always fun to be part of and to watch (for obvious reasons). The Eagles have a new shuffle board and I'd suspect things could get interesting in that arena.

Finally, the Lucky Diamond folks (they handle the gambling) will be there with lots of really great door prizes and other things of interest. This could be fun.

So, be there or be square.” (Bud Barrick)
