NEWS

Attention all old Southwest Show Team members, groupies , roadies & our chili friends. We are having our 20 th reunion on Labor Day Weekend. We have had an article in CHN, invitations mailed and invitations by word of mouth. But as chiliheads you are very lousy at sending a RSVP. I understand that. It is the reason very few of us register in advance for a cookoff, GP meeting, etc. We are getting close and we need to know how much food to buy. We are furnishing the food. You are furnishing your favorite beverages.
So, PLEASE send a yes or no to
hrk@gvec.net Now !!! Before you forget about it again. Need more Info, use the e-mail address above. Thanks. (Ray King)

“Aug 27, 2005-002 - Timonium MD. Maryland State Chili Championship Fire on the Midway. That's right, the event we all know and love is back. The top three MD finishers will automatically qualify for TICC. The top MD finisher will be reimbursed $500 for expenses if they attend TICC. Huge event, with large crowds, please bring extra chili for public tasting. Entry fee $22, turn-in 3 PM. Junior Chili and Salsa Competition and Best Booth. The Mason Dixon Pod is delighted to once again have the Fire on the Midway CCO back out at the State Fair and is especially pleased that FOTM is also now the MD State Chili Championship. For those of you who have been long time supporters of the cookoff, and for the new cooks we are thrilled to welcome, there are some things that you need to be aware of. We are no longer setting up near Exhibition Hall, we will instead be near the Grandstand of the racetrack. As always there will be free parking passes and admission for all cooks and judges. However, as in the years past you will need to let me know you plan on coming so that I can have you on the list at the gate. If you are not on the list, you won't get a pass, so please let me know ASAP if you are coming and if you need an individual parking pass or you plan to carpool with another cook. Also the Baltimore County Health Department will be on location in the morning to check that we have all the required supplies. So please bring a thermometer, have your meat packed in adequate ice, have a small 3-compartment washing station, catch basin for handwashing, etc. If you need more specifics about this please feel free to give Brian a call at home any evening 410 836 1825. As always we keep the information about throwdown to ourselves!!! If they find out you are planning on serving pre-made chili they will not issue the cooks under your tent a health permit! It's the don't ask, don't tell program. We will bring the throwdown out later in the afternoon in an attempt to raise money for our great charity, Annie's Foundation
www.anniesfoundation.org So please bring extra chili so we can make this year's fundraising the best yet. Also we want to continue to have an Jr Chili Cookoff (10 -17yrs of age)and salsa competition at this cookoff. The Jr entry fee and the fee for salsa is $5 each. So if you have a child that is planning on cooking or you want to bring your salsa out to compete, let me know so I have some idea how many extra judges, etc that I will need. In addition, our sponsors have stepped up to the plate and once again helped us get great t-shirts and goody bags for all the cooks! Also the awards are very unique and first place will get several great prizes. Well we hope to see you there! If you need any information contact Brian Smith masondixonchili@aol.com. Phone 410-836-1825. And watch for Brian and the MDP's treasurer, Jenny Lawler, next Friday morning between 8:30-9:00am on Fox 45's morning show as they talk about the FOTM-MD State CCO, Annie's Foundation and cook a pot of Texas Red !!!!” (Brian Smith)

“Chili Friends & Chili Pods we need your help. Megan Dreibrodt graduated in May and is enrolled in Tarleton State University. She is short of funds for her tuition. Her dad, Pat Dreibrodt, chili cook & friend, has Sleep Apnea. He has no insurance. So far the treatments are not working and he is having surgery Mon or Tues.

Two pods that knew of this have contributed toward Megan's tuition. Sotol Pod and State of Alabama Pod, and the Highland Lakes Pod. Megan received some scholarships from her school
and Tarleton but they were not enough. She has been living in Stephenville since July searching for work. I spoke with her last week and she is working. We appreciate anything & anyone that can contribute to this young lady and give her a start toward her education. Megan is well known in central Texas and has assisted in the success of many cookoffs. If you care to contribute, please notify Ruby Ross (
rross@tstar.net). She is $500 short & this is not including her books. Many thanks!” (Ruby Ross)

“Please ask our wonderful chili family to keep my son 1st Lt. Justin Peters and the 272 MWSS (Marine Wing Support Squadron) newly arrived at Al-Asad airbase, Iraq in their daily prayers for the next 7 months.” (Georgeann Peters)

Tubby Wilcox, a member of the Texas Hill Country Pod, passed away last week. He had been in the VA hospital in San Antonio for quite awhile fighting cancer and other problems. Tubby and his wife, Blanche were charter members of the pod. Tubby didn’t cook chili, but he was our Pepper Popper for many years and always handled registration at all the hill country cookoffs. After his wife died about 8 years ago, Tubby made his only trip to Terlingua to see his wife’s name on the memorial board. He lived up at the Hermann Sons Retirement Home in Comfort, and never missed a pod meeting. He was a very nice gentleman, and will be missed by his chili friends.

If anyone would like to send a card: 11805 32nd Street, Santa Fe, Tx 77510. (Shirley Stateczny)

Howdy all. This Saturday Aug 20th is the Iowa State Championship Chili Cookoff in Cedar Rapids. It will be held in the parking lot of the Chrome Horse Saloon at the corner of 3rd St and 12th Ave SE. Call for directions. Gary is the Defending Champion and we have lots of great chili to taste. I believe it will be a $3 donation to sample all chili's. Or Come and cook. First time entry's pay no fee and you would receive plenty of instruction. I do believe that we will have several Jr division cooks that make a pretty good batch also. Hope to see you there. (Jerry Christensen)

As a participant in the Texas State Open Chili Championship, I want to thank the entire Texas Open committee for doing an outstanding job. From the time we arrived until we departed, committee members were working hard to insure everyone had a good time and was ready to help in anyway they could. The cookoff was smoothly run. The events during the weekend were great - CASINO night, Italian night, raffles, silent auction and others added to the fun and comradeship of which CASI is about. I am very proud to have won the Texas State Championship and will do my best to represent what this championship is about during the coming year. (Ken Rodd)

2005 Texas Open Champ, Ken Rodd Posted by Picasa

There are 16 days lefts until the absolute deadline for all of the pod credentials to be completed. Forms were sent out to the pods and marked “due immediately” on June 20, nearly two months ago. It is too late to avoid round the clock work to get these processed at this point. We are really worried that this slow response may threaten our ability to get some pods seated for the meeting. If you belong to one of the pods listed below, please urge your Great Pepper to submit this information immediately and to verify that it is complete before sending it.
