“Yesterday, Barbara Large had wires run from her brain, over the top of her head, down her neck and over her shoulder and a button the size of a silver dollar inserted on both sides of her chest. Wow! Barbara goes back to Lubbock on August 4th, and she called it "gets the batteries tweeked" and will be given a magnet to run over the buttons on her chest when the temors are bad. Barbara is home now and appreciates all the calls and emails.” (Dorathy Williams)
“This past Wednesday the Mother of Karen Reinke passed from our earthly presents to be with her Lord and Savior in Heaven. Interment and graveside services are immediate family only. No flowers please. For those desiring; memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in the name of Margaret Wimberly.” (Frank Fox)

Mark August 13 on your calendars to cook chili in the "Town Too Tough To Die", Tombstone Arizona. High Desert Pod is putting on the cookoff to benefit the Vigilante Charities of Tombstone. There will be old-fashioned costume contests, gunfights, and generally lots of fun during the day. Friday night before the cookoff, the Vigilantes will host the cooks at a home style dinner that is always satisfying, and door prizes given...usually enough that each cook wins something. Clean those stoves off, pack ‘em up and head out to the Old West's "liveliest" graveyard...Tombstone Arizona, for some great fun. (Greg Monger)
“It is early, but now is the time to make your resevations (either RV Site or a cabin) at Natures Resort in Homosassa, Florida for the double header chili cookoff on October 8th and October 9th. Greats sites available down by the Marina and Marina Lounge - cabins over looking the water. Call 800-301-7880 and ask for Freida and tell her you are a Chili Cook.” (Ken Rodd)

“September 17, 2005 – The 2nd Annual Mountain States Chili Cookoff
Do you cook the best Chili around? How about a fantastic Green Chili? Do your Hot Wings get rave reviews? Are you interested in some last minute points for the 39th Annual Terlingua International? Well here’s your opportunity to strut your stuff and stir your pot. The Second Annual Mountain States Chili Cookoff is just around the corner on September 17. We are looking forward to an exciting cookoff filled with wild slicing and dicing, simmering pots, colorful booths, wacky cooks, and the quality judging that has made our cookoff a perennial favorite.
This year, in addition to our favorite Red and Green categories, we have added Hot Wings. These were added by the vote of the cooks. Anything goes here, but be warned No Sissy Wings! We want to see wings that range from a slow simmer to a fiery eruption. Hence the name, “Hot Wings”
We have also added a Corporate / Restaurant Shootout. Sit back and watch as area Restaurants and Businesses slug it out to see who has the best chili in the area.
Last but certainly not least, The Colorado Junior Chili Cookoff! Young culinary geniuses try their hand at perfecting that old familiar standby—Texas Red.
All net proceeds are donated to Mountain States Children’s Home
As always, there will also be the famous Mountain States Children’s Home Bargain Auction going on at the same time as the cookoff. Items from A to Z, North and South, East and West, Up and Down—and all points in between, will be up for auction at Bargain Prices. So make sure you have plenty of room in your “chili mobile” to take a few “extra” items home with you.
We are really looking forward to this year’s event! We expect even more cooks, more spectators and more visibility for everyone, so start fine-tuning your recipes today!

My long time friend Barbara Large (this is one gutsy woman) has recently under gone brain surgery. This procedure was done while she was AWAKE. First they put her head in a halo. Then they drilled 4 holes on the right side of her head, inserted a probe until they found the nerve they were looking for, then drilled 2 more holes on the left side of her head. She went home the next morning. This procedure was done to find the part of her brain that was misfiring, causing her to shake uncontrollably.
Tomorrow Barbara goes back to Lubbock to have wires run from her brain (while sedated) to an area on her chest, where they will install a button of sorts that she can push when her tremors start up. This woman needs a big hand, just don't push her buttons! (Dorathy Williams)

The 22nd Annual Purgatory Creek Pod Cookoff once again was a success and enjoyed by all who attended. Even though we did have some rain, there was time for several float trips down the river. The raffle and silent auction had many excellent items and I would like to thank not only all the participants, but also the many donors that contributed to these fundraisers. Thanks to everyone that attended, cooked, helped with the judging, silent auction, raffle, food, cooks party, registration, and helped with clean up, or just came and had fun!
Plans for the 23rd annual cookoff are already in process and I hope that everyone will mark this on their calendar again for next year. Always the 3rd weekend in July! (Karen Reinke)

ATTENTION YOUNG AT HEART COOKS..........................
After telling people the cool stuff the Juniors are going to receive at Texas Open(see related story), I had many cooks ask if they could cook in the junior cookoff. Well, that's not exactly kosher, but...do not despair....I have come up with a way to resolve this. There will be a competition at 11:30, Saturday morning in the Junior Cooking Area. The contest is open to those cooks 60 years of age or older and will be limited to the first 10 young at heart cooks to sign up with me. (Don't make me card you please )
At 11:30 that morning, you will present yourself to the junior cooks and make your case as to why you think you would make a great junior. After debating your skills, the junior cooks will decide who they think will make the BEST SENIOR JUNIOR.
BRIBERY IS EXPECTED. ( NO MONETARY GIFTS )......beads, candy, small things to give the juniors.....you know what to do.
I will be signing up those cooks that want to participate Saturday morning during registration. The winning cook will receive a fantastic gift package..........
So...if you are planning on attending the Texas Open, make your preparations and find me at registration that Saturday morning.
If you have any questions, please contact me at kdkone@aol.com or call me at 281.850.6387. Thanks everyone.
TEXAS OPEN Junior Chili Championship
OK everyone....here is the information for the Junior Cookoff. The junior area will be located in the large pavillion. If you were there last year, we will be located in the same place. ALL JUNIOR COOKS ENTERED MUST COOK IN THIS AREA. (NO ADULTS ALLOWED, NO EXCEPTIONS) (I don't a count as an adult and there are many poeple that can verify that) If you need a stove or table for your junior, please let me know so that I can make arrangements.
There is a showmanship category also, so if they would like to participate, please bring their show stuff with them. For meat, they can cook grind but I would prefer they use hamburger. That's up to you and them. Also, please make sure they are cooking at least 2lbs. There is also going to be a People's Choice category again this year and all the Juniors are automatically entered in this. Entry fee is $10.00 and turn-in is 1 pm. Cooking age is 6-17.
Now for the good stuff..................I have been blessed with luck this year in finding sponsors and underwriters for the Junior Cookoff. This year, First through Tenth place chili will receive hand painted stoves. Plus, an official TO stove bag, a special edition TO Jr. Cap, a plaque and several other items. There are also trophies and prizes for First through Third show and First through Third People's Choice.
If you have any questions, please contact me at kdkone@aol.com or 281.850.6387. Thanks everyone and look forward to seeing you at the Texas Open. (Keith Karaff)
Just wanted to send out another remind in case you missed the first one that this Saturday (7/30) is the Mason Dixon Pod's Annual CCO and Party. Entry fee is $20 which includes pod membership. Turn-in is 3:00pm and the party starts at 2:00pm. Keg beer and soda will be provided. As usual, we're also asking everyone to please bring a dish of some sort to share. Let me know if you are planning on attending (so I know how many hogs I have to rustle up for the smoker) and also what dish you plan on bringing so I can add it to the food list. We also have room for tents if anyone wants to camp out for the night. E-mail or call 443.807.3298 Hope to see ya'll there. (Brian Smith)

The small town of Golden City, MO opened their doors once again this year, and was the host for the 2005 Missouri State Open CASI Chisi Cook-off. July High Temeratures along with the Midwest Humidity did not discourage the crowd that came to taste Chili cooked by 35 CASI cooks / 7 Junior & 2 Novice.
This year 13 Salsa were judged, and comments by the Salsa Judges indicated this years contest was one of the best if not the best that has been held @ Golden Harvest Days. Some said the use of items from local gardens "Just Gave It That Home Town
Taste".
Once again this year the winners of CASI & Novice Chili were award Embroadered Rocking Chairs purchased thru Bass Pro Inc, and displaying the well know Bass Pro logo. Awards were held in the covered shelter house which did provide some relief from the heat. With the chairs displayed in mumerical order for the winners as numbers were called they came to the stage and set in their chair.
Top 3 States winners and 1st in Show (all qualifing for Terlingua) were awarded Portable Gas fueled Deep Fryers.
Junior Cooks were awarded equally for the efforts put forth in cooking their chili, each Junior cooking was awarded a certifacte indicating where they placed along with a Portable Remote CD Player.
Not only were the cooks and show teams rewarded, but the public and cooks raffle was larger with more items to be picked from. Some of the items the winners had to pick from this year were Week end trips to Branson, MO / tickets to see the World Championship Boston Red Sox In Kansas City play the Royals. And if you were a National League Baseball fan you could choose from tickets to see the Central Division St Louis Cardinals.
The High Heat, Rising Fuel Prices and Personal Plans may have kept some from being able to attend this year but it did not hinder the crowd or atomsphere of the Cooks Party hosted by Junior & Dixie Johnson and held at their detail shop or as some Call it the Chili House.
Always the highlight of any of the Cooks Partys held by Junior & Dixie is the Cooking done by "Big Bob" alias Bob Essner of Grandview, MO
