“As you know the annual CCO at the Cloudcroft, NM Ski Lodge is July 23rd. I'd like to invite everyone to come and join us in the cool Sacramento Mountains. This year should be extra special based upon information I received yesterday when speaking to the owners of the Lodge. As I understand things, the Adam's family has leased the restaurant and it has been opened as a steak house serving a full menu on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It is also my understanding that there is live music on the deck in the evenings, free of charge. So come and join us for another great CCO. Hope to see you there.” (Bud Barrick)

Norma and I want to express out thanks and appreciation for the wonderful support we received from the people of Marathon, from the Marathon Chamber of Commerce, from all of the businesses in Marathon, and from all the people who drove out to Marathon to cook and enjoy this new great cookoff in West Texas. Special thanks go to the Black Gold Pod for their support and help. Bruce Jones did a magnificent job running the judging and Boomer Kingston came to be our announcer on Saturday. There are so many people that we need to thank and if I start listing them all it will take a very long paragraph and still I might leave someone out. So thanks to everybody! We raised about $1700 for our two charities – “The Marathon Volunteer Fire Dept.” and “The Friends of the Post”.
If you get to see Phil Barnes or Barbara Herrin anytime soon tell them you want to see their 1st Place chili trophies. – Saturday there was a bronze Cowboy hat by Lloyd Goldwire and on Sunday there was a carved wooden cowboy hat by Jim Stewart, master wood carver of Marathon. Both were very unique trophies. The Saturday show trophy was a statue of a weathered cowboy and the Sunday show trophy was a statue of a buffalo.
All who attended had a great time and are looking forward to next year. So make your plans to compete in Marathon for points and great trophies the next time around.” (Elton Homesley)

“Alice and Carlton Reynolds of Rockport TX hosted the fourth annual Estes Flats cook-off at their palatial estate on the Texas Gulf Coast.

This was a two day event held on the Fourth of July weekend. Friday hamburgers with all the trimmings were served. Saturday about forty people went to a restaurant for
Famous seafood of the Texas Gulf Coast, and Sunday was a pot luck supper. About $400 worth of fire crackers fired off on Saturday and Sunday nights.

This cook-off is well supported by the locals and they contributed many wonderful prizes for the raffle both days. If you missed this cook-off you need to mark it on your calendar for next year on the Fourth of July weekend. There are a few plugs available but plenty of room for motor home parking and day trippers.

“Happy belated 4th of July from the High Desert Pod. We were all too busy cooking chili to wish you all a Happy 4th on the 4th....we had a great cookoff in Veterans Memorial Park to honor the country.....the 15th Annual Welcome Home Desert Storm 4th of July Chili Cookoff.

It started Sunday night with a potluck and grilled meat party for the cooks and we had the standard picnic style grub to choose from...spicy hot slaw, macaroni salad, brats, steaks, burgers, and hot dogs, quesadillas, chips and salsa, brownies and cakes and cookies.

On the 4th, the park had static displays of military equipment from nearby Fort Huachuca, AZ (home of U.S. Army Military Intelligence, and the U.S. Army's Information Systems Command), there were re-enactments of an old west cavalry charge, fun and games for kids, a pancake breakfast, music, our chili cokoff and of course, that evening was one of the best fireworks displays in the state of Arizona.

29 cooks turned in their samples of red to see who could be the 4th of July Champion on this very hot but fun day. Captain (Ben Berry) America handed out ice cold slices of watermelon to the cooks during the cookoff, which was much appreciated. We had several VIP judges to include the Honorable Congressman Jim Kolbe and the Mayor of Sierra Vista, Tom Wheeler. Jesika Cline, Miss Sierra Vista, handed out our trophies and gave hugs to the winners...but the real winners were the San Pedro Kiwanis charities...which gained $648 from our cookoff efforts. Heres the results:

Chili:
1st - Russ Hite, Sierra Vista, AZ (Q)
2d - Norm Dunn, Sierra Vista, AZ
3d - Sunny Fichtl, Sierra Vista, AZ
4th - Roy Fisher, Sierra Vista, AZ
5th - Jim (Black Eye) Tomlin, Sierra Vista, AZ
6th - Leo Lemelson, Sierra Vista, AZ
7th - Ted Fichtl, Sierra Vista, AZ
8th - John Johnson, Sierra Vista, AZ
9th - Tom Smith, Hereford, AZ
10th - Greg Monger, Sierra Vista, AZ

Show:
1st - Kokopelli Chili II, Sunny Fichtil, Sierra Vista, AZ
2d - Los Tres Bendajos, Ben Berry, Sierra Vista, AZ
3d - Professor Monger's Chili Elixir, Greg Monger, Sierra Vista, AZ

Furthest travelled went to Peter Braly of Tucson.

This was the U.S.A. at its best...come on out and join us next year for some good old fashioned fun on the 4th of July, 2006.” (Greg Monger)

“Yesterday on the great day of the 4th of July we were privileged to have our chili cookoff on Fort Lewis, WA to help them celebrate their Freedom Fest. We had 18 participants which included four soldier cooks (actual cooks in the military) and one of them Ryan Starr (cook at the stockade) finished fifth. The Washington weather was above and beyond the call of duty in that it was hot in the lower 80's. Order of finish were: 1st - Betty Mayer ( six year cook and first time to ever get a first place); 2nd - Victor Price (first time cook and parents were nice to me to bring him because I need cooks); 3rd - Larry Mayer; 4th - LaRaine Baker; 5th - Ryan Starr (first time cook); 6th - Dennis Bloomfield; 7th - Evelyn Trevino; 8th - Peggy Vargas; 9th - Judie Anderson; 10th - Al Ruskin. And Ruth Peach got 1st Place People's Pick.” (Ken Peach)

“I want to remind everyone of the location change for the the Red Oak Chamber Chili Cook-off this Saturday, July 9th. It is being held at the corner lot of I-35 Service Road and Reese Dr. next to Red Oak Health and Rehab center. Also the Ellis Co. Military Moms will be accepting donations for our troops. Items needed include dvds, cds, paper/pens, baby wipes, kleenex, beef jerky, bagged candy, sweetened Koolaid. If any chili cooks would like to donate any of these items, we will make sure they get sent to our troops.” (Michele Goodwin)

We wish to thank Dale Goree, Marketing Rep. from Mac Haik for the wonderful treatment we received from the entire Staff. Also, for 13 beautiful placques. A thunderous round of applause to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Swart, who drove from Corsicana, cooked their chili in one hour "To make sure that Sue and John had enough cooks." That folks is called love of CASI and friendship. Thanks Robbie and Ken. Also, kudos to ED Alan and Susan, bone tired from their recent trip, who came and helped John so I could cook. We thank Ken Rodd for getting this cook off in the making and for giving John and me the opportunity to take it, since John speaks "Ford". Thank you Directors. Thank you John Caffey for being a great Head Judge, thanks Jeannette for assisting. Thanks to James Bauer and Jeannette for heading up the Tallying crew. And a really big hug and thanks to Nephew Billy, who helps John so much. Thank you Donna and HEB for the crackers. One more time, I did want all of you to know that everyone deserves a great big thanks for being there. You all made it happen and made it Sanctioned. Had the opportunity to tell a bunch of folks and employees about CASI and chili. Used one of our best tools, Terlingua Trails to give out. Several were left on the showroom floor. Being this cook off was for the Scholarship Fund, it was very apropos that the Trails had articles from recipients and about the 2005 winners. Life is Good. God Bless Us All.” (Sue Caffey)
